You're about to fulfill one of the greatest dreams of anyone who loves to travel: to see the world! And, of course, to embark on this adventure outside South America, a Brazilian passport is your first travel companion.

If you've done a bit of research, you'll know that securing this document is the number one planning step - even before you take advantage of that unmissable airline ticket deal. It sounds basic, but many people don't get around to getting their passport until after they've secured their tickets, which can turn into a headache (and extra expense) if there's a delay in delivery.

Even those who already have a passport need to keep an eye on it: it must be valid until the day of departure. To make your life easier, Happy Tours has prepared an up-to-date step-by-step guide so that you can obtain or renew your passport without stress. Check it out! 🚗💼

How to get your Brazilian passport: up-to-date step-by-step?

Nowadays, the process is simpler and more digital. With a little organization and an investment of R$257.25 (the updated fee in 2025), you can start your international journey. Here's how it works:

1. Separate the necessary documents

First of all, check that your ID is up to date - if the photo is too different, you may need to get a duplicate. For children under 12, the birth certificate serves as identification. Other important documents:

  • Official identity document with photo (ID, driver's license, work permit, previous passport, etc.);
  • Valid CPF (can be on your ID, CNH or other official document);
  • Marriage or divorce certificate (if there has been a change of name);
  • Proof of electoral discharge (for those over 18);
  • Proof of military service (men between the ages of 19 and 45);
  • Application protocol and proof of payment of the GRU fee.

The list can vary according to your profile, so when you fill in the form, the Federal Police system will tell you exactly what you need to bring.

2. Apply online

Go to the Federal Police website and fill in the electronic form with your personal details. At the end of the form, a protocol will be generated, along with a Federal Tax Collection Form (GRU) for payment of the fee.

3. Pay the fee

The standard fee is R$257.25 (in 2025) and can be paid at banks, lottery shops, internet banking and even via Pix, depending on the bank. Pay attention to when the GRU is due!

4. Schedule a face-to-face appointment

Once your payment has been cleared, book an appointment at your nearest Federal Police station. The quietest times are usually in the early afternoon, but availability varies according to demand in your city.

5. Attend the service

On the appointed day, arrive at least half an hour early and bring your original documents. There's no need to worry about a 3×4 photo: the official photo is taken on site (except for children under 5, who need to bring a current 5×7 photo, in color and with a white background). Your fingerprints will also be taken.

6. Wait for delivery

The normal delivery time is between 6 and 10 working days, but this can vary during periods of high demand. You can follow the status on the Federal Police website. Passports can only be picked up by the holder, presenting an identity document and the receipt from the service.

7. Get your passport and pack your bags!

Once the document is ready, you have up to 90 calendar days to pick it up. Otherwise, it will be canceled and you'll have to start the process all over again. Once it's ready, you can check what to pack in your suitcase and get everything ready!

My passport has expired. Now what?

If your passport has expired, there is no automatic "renewal": you need to apply for a new one, following the steps again, including paying the fee. If you still have your old passport valid, bring it with you on the day of the appointment to cancel it.

Golden tip: many countries require passports to be valid for at least 6 months at the time of travel. So if yours is about to expire, start the process now to avoid unforeseen circumstances!
