The curious origin of the Oktoberfest: a wedding party!

There are many theories that encompass the origin of the festival and, just like how Oktoberfest works, the story directly reflects the historical context of the country.

Oktoberfest originated in Germany in the 1800s when the incumbent king (King Louis I) and Princess Tereza decided to get married in a public celebration that lasted for a whole month. All the elements present in the couple's celebration are still present today, with the exception of the horse race which was replaced in the following years by beer brewers.

Contrary to what many people imagine, the Oktoberfest did not arise with the expectation of getting party guests drunk, but rather to celebrate love. However, beer quickly gained prominence in the couple's days of celebration. This is because beer production took place in the colder months of the year and needed to be consumed quickly so that new batches could be produced.

The success of the festival was so great that, the following year, a new edition was presented to the Munich public, also repeating itself in the following years after that one. Thus began a new tradition in the country that would become a worldwide success in the following years.

How the Oktoberfest works in Germany

Every year the Oktoberfest welcomes almost 7 million visitors, if we take into account only the original festival in Munich. In addition, the festival receives no less than 7 million litres of beer duly enjoyed by visitors. Sound a bit low to you?

With 7 million litres it is possible to fill two Olympic swimming pools and still have more beer left over.

The festival can also be enjoyed by children. Although beer is a big part of the event, the drink does not sum up the whole party. It is a festival for the whole family and, believe me, especially children love to enjoy the music, parades and cultural attractions.

The festival starts in the month of September, despite its name, and totals almost twenty days of celebration. The first day is dedicated to a beautiful open-air opening parade, with typical costumes and music. Times vary from year to year and from day to day, but generally follow the pattern of 10am-11pm.

There are an average of 15 beer sheds throughout Oktoberfest that should be - all - tried!
